Granite gateway opening onto the resort garden and mountains
Our story

Built from the valley, for the valley.

Diwan e Hunza is a small resort with a simple idea: welcome travellers to Gojal the way the people of Gojal always have.

The name

Why "Diwan"?

A diwan was the great hall of a household, the room where guests were received, fed and given the best seat by the fire. It is a word about welcome.

We chose it because hospitality in Upper Hunza is not a service, it is a tradition. A guest arriving off the Karakoram Highway should feel looked after from the first cup of tea.

The architecture

Granite, timber and light.

Our walls are built from local stone laid by hand, the same granite you see on the slopes above Gulmit. Timber balconies and window frames echo traditional Wakhi houses, while big panes of glass bring the peaks indoors.

The buildings step down the hillside through an old orchard, linked by flagstone paths and a stream fed by glacier meltwater. We kept the trees, and built around them.

The place

Gulmit, the heart of Gojal.

Gulmit was once the summer seat of the Mirs of Hunza and is still the cultural centre of Gojal, home to the Wakhi people. It sits on the Karakoram Highway between Attabad Lake and Passu, surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountains on earth.

Its orchards, glaciers and quiet village lanes make it the perfect base for exploring Upper Hunza, far enough from the crowds and close to everything.
